Full-Stack Open Source Web Application Development

Open Tech Strategies (OTS) is seeking contract developers to assist with developing and deploying open source web-based applications to clients. This includes both custom-written software (often based on Django/Wagtail or other web frameworks) and contribution to existing projects (including but not limited to Hypha). Based on past experience, we estimate a time commitment of approximately 20-25 hours per week, but are flexible and open to discussing commitments higher or lower than that.

This position involves interacting directly with our clients, with support and direction from OTS management. It also involves publishing new open source software and working closely with upstream open source projects — we send our changes upstream whenever we can, keeping our customer-specific delta (which is still open source) as small as possible at all times.

Our projects involve both front-end and back-end coding. If you are experienced in one of those but not the other, we encourage you to apply anyway. You will be part of a team and there will be opportunities to learn new skills.

While this position is remote, applicants must be within 3 hours of either the U.S. Central or U.S. Eastern time zones, as this work involves regular real-time communications with the OTS team and the customers' teams. Contractors in or near Chicago, Illinois have the option of coming in to our downtown office to work; we will provide desk space, connectivity, and friendly faces — some of which even belong to members of our team.

OTS negotiates rates based on experience and skills. We value having a diverse team and strongly encourage members of groups that are underrepresented in software technology to apply.

OTS is committed to open source philosophically and as a business strategy. We work in public repositories using open source tools. If you have a visible open source profile — accounts on major open source project hosting sites, a trail of participation in some open source projects, etc. — please mention it when submitting your qualifications.

If you are interested in this position, please email a cover letter, your CV or résumé, and any additional qualifications to jobs {_AT_} opentechstrategies.com.

Back-end Open Source Developer (Part-Time)

> Status: closed (originally posted 2021-11-01)

Open Tech Strategies is currently seeking a back-end open source developer to work with us and a client to add rclone support to the client's platform, via one or more of rclone's supported protocols (WebDAV is the leading candidate, but protocol investigation is part of the job), and then to implement synchronization between the client's platform and certain cloud storage services.

We expect this work to last at least six months, assuming approximately 25 hours per week, though a faster schedule is fine too.

Sysadmin / DevOps Administrator (Part-Time)

> Status: closed

Open Tech Strategies, a provider of expert advice and services to help organizations use the advantages of open source to reach their goals, is currently seeking a part-time Development Operations and Systems Administrator to:

  • Maintain a variety of servers and systems on free and open source platforms, primarily Debian GNU/Linux.

  • Configure and maintain FOSS communications tools used by OTS and its clients and partners.

  • Manage backups for a diverse set of systems including both OTS-built software and 3rd-party open source software.

  • Help design and set up development environments, testing systems, and continuous integration services for our open source projects.

  • Engage directly with OTS clients when needed. (While this role is not primarily a client-facing role, we expect it to involve direct interaction with clients from time to time. Please note that some of our clients use proprietary communications tools, e.g., Zoom, Google Docs, Slack, etc, and therefore applicants need to be willing to use such tools when interacting with those clients.)

We anticipate this work to be about 15-20 hours per week. The exact amount may vary based on skills, experience, and your own availability.

PHP/Python Developer (Part-Time)

We currently seek software developers to fill contract positions. We work on all kinds of interesting projects, and our current need is for PHP and Python coders interested in contributing to projects in the non-profit and philanthropy space. Familiarity with customizing and extending MediaWiki would be helpful, but is not required.

This role is for projects scheduled to last 6 months to a year, with the possibility of follow-on work and other projects as well. We anticipate 15-20 hours per week of work, though that might change as we take on new projects.

If interested, please email jobs {_AT_} opentechstrategies.com.

Open Source Developer With Java Experience (Full-Time)

> Status: closed

OTS is seeking an open source developer experienced in Java for full-time work.

The project involves extending and improving an open source code base written in Java. It requires someone comfortable writing web applications in Java, including working with test frameworks and managing dependencies. There will be other work beyond this primary project, so we're looking for someone who's willing to learn new skills and programming languages on the fly; we train as needed, and believe that learning on the job is normal.

OTS is based in Chicago, New York, and Minneapolis. Preference will be given to candidates in those cities, but we are open to remote applicants too. We negotiate rates based on experience and skills.

OTS is committed to building a diverse team, and we strongly encourage members of groups that are underrepresented in software development to apply. Please note that due to client requirements this position must be filled by a U.S. citizen.

Open Source Developer With Java, CSS, HTML Experience (Full/Part Time TBD)

> Status: closed (posted 2017-08-22)

This position is now closed.

Open Tech Strategies seeks a contract developer fluent in Java, CSS, and HTML for a short project that could lead to ongoing work.

We are developing an open source Java-based web application that runs under Wildfly. Its user interface is currently generated by legacy code in a somewhat ad hoc manner, and we are looking for a developer to help us move the UI toward a more templatized and configurable structure. The first task is probably to adjust the CSS and then start moving the UI components toward templates. This can be a part-time or full-time role until task is completed; this task may lead to follow-on work as development continues.

The project is free software (Apache-2.0 licensed), operates in the healthcare landscape, and runs with a small core development team (~7 people), though we expect that team to expand as the project continues.

If you are interested, please tell us a little about your background, your expected availability in the next month, and your rates. Also, please give us links to your public work on GitHub or elsewhere. We are committed to open source both philosophically and as a business strategy, and we love to see a history of effective participation in FOSS projects, both in code and in discussion forums such as mailing lists, issue trackers, etc.

OTS is based in Chicago and New York, and preference will be given to candidates in those cities, but we are open to remote applicants too. We value having a diverse team, and strongly encourage members of groups that are underrepresented in software development to apply. Because of client requirements, this position must be filled by a U.S. citizen.
